BLOG: Good News for a Good Man

Jan 21 2014 - 4:20pm

The racing community, at least the part that I'm most a member of, is pretty close-knit. We know each other's families, revel in the successes and spring to help when there's trouble.

But there's not much you can do when the Big C (cancer) comes calling, as it did at Steve Byrnes' house.

Back in the hoary days of World Sports Enterprises and NASCAR coverage on The Nashville Network, Steve Byrnes was a major cog in the talent side of the business and I was part of the Web coverage team for Patti Wheeler. Steve, Glen Grissom and I were of an age and spent a lot of time at the track and in the office, hashing over the world we covered and solving NASCAR's problems one cup of coffee at a time.

When Big C came calling in September of last year, Steve hunkered down and dealt with it. It couldn't have been fun, but that's what you do.

On Monday, Steve tweeted, "My Radiologist called this afternoon. Great news...scans look good! Thank you all for you support, prayers and kindness. We are humbled!!!".

He'll be back on RaceHub next week and plans to be back at Daytona.

To Steve, his lovely wife Karen and his family, here's a big Thank You, Lord, and I can't wait to see him next month.
