Pennsylvania 400 2013 Results: Reaction, Leaders and Post-Race Analysis

In another amazing race from the world-famous Pocono Speedway, it was Kasey Kahne and the No. 5 car that took the checkered flag and won the 2013 GoBowling.com 400.   

It is Kahne’s 16th career victory and second of the season, and it helps his case for being one of the top contenders heading toward the final Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

The win at Pocono was a great showing by Hendrick Motorsports across the board. Jeff Gordon finished second, Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished fifth and Jimmie Johnson finished 13th after dominating much of the race before a tire issue cost him the chance at a victory.

Kurt Busch managed a very respectable third place, and Indianapolis 400 winner Ryan Newman followed his victory up with a fourth-place finish.

Johnson carried his momentum from Indianapolis into Pocono by winning the pole, but it didn’t take long for the race to get interesting. In the first turn of Lap 1, Juan Pablo Montoya wrecked Ricky Stenhouse Jr. into the wall, bringing out the race’s first caution.

It was a wild start to what would be a wild race.

After going green once again, Denny Hamlin and the No. 11 car lost control and smashed into the wall on Lap 15. This accident brought out the second yellow of the day.

The Pocono event stayed clean for a long stretch and forced teams to pit under the green flag. After the field shuffled around and the strategies were hashed out, Johnson was once again in first place.

A tire failure with David Gilliland and his No. 38 brought out the third caution flag of the day on Lap 53. After another round of pit stops, Brad Keselowski and the No. 2 car took the lead after staying out.

Johnson was running the fastest laps of the day until he blew out a right-front tire on Lap 76 and brought out the caution. The damage sustained in the accident forced him and his team out of contention.

Keselowski and Kahne raced for the lead, but ultimately, the No. 5 car took the top spot on the scoring chart until yet another caution came out when David Stremme blew out his right-front tire and drove into the wall on Lap 95.

The green flag was only out for a short time before the No. 43 car and Aric Almirola brought out the sixth caution of the day.

While Pocono Speedway is usually known for the long periods of clean racing, the seventh caution was brought out just two laps into the run when Jeff Burton, Danica Patrick, Travis Kvapil and Paul Menard were involved in a multi-car wreck.

Kahne once again took the lead, and with 30 laps remaining in the event, the last round of green-flag pit stops commenced and he once again shuffled out to the lead.

With the penultimate restart coming in the last 10 laps after a debris caution, Gordon took the late lead, but another yellow flag forced one last restart. Kahne saw his opportunity to shine and capitalized on it.

After another wild race, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series moves toward the Chase for the Sprint Cup as it travels to Watkins Glen International for the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen. The next race will take place Aug. 11 at 1:19 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN.
