Speeds Jump at Indy with New Car

According to all reports, there's a speedfest going on at Indy with the new Gen-6 machine.

During a Goodyear tire test on the 2.5-mile oval, speeds were near the track record of 186.293 mph set by Casey Mears in 2004, and Jeff Gordon was better than 187.2 mph...unofficially, of course.

Mears' official record time of 48.311 seconds was blistered by Gordon's 48.07 this morning. That's 187.227 mph.

Mark Martin Tweeted that he'd hit 212 mph at the end of the back straight, while Gordon was at 214.

The Gen-6 car has broken five track records in nine races this season -- going over 200 mph at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a good sign that another could be in the books when the Sprint Cup Series heads to Indy for the Crown Royal Presents The Your Hero's Name Here at the Brickyard 400 on Sunday, July 28.
